Climb the Highest Peak in the Northeast

If you're looking for a serious challenge this winter, this is for you.

Mount Washington stands at 6,288 feet and is the highest mountain in the northeastern United States. In the winter, it is home to one of the harshest environments on earth and considered a world-class mountaineering achievement. While the severe weather will test your skills, the views along the path to the peak are unmatched.

The three-day adventure begins with a winter mountaineering course, practicing rope skills and learning to move on the mountain as a team. After a good night's rest at the Appalachian Trail's own Joe Dodge Lodge, located at the base of the mountain, we will rise early and attempt the magnificent peak.

While our sights are on the summit, our primary goal is always your safety. Our trained guides will prepare you to move confidently up the mountain, but we will not hesitate to redefine our goal if conditions indicate that we should. Even an attempt on Washington in the winter is an epic feat.

A Mount Washington summit is prime training for those considering peaks such as Mount Rainier and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Mountaineering boots, crampons and an axe are required and may be rented.

DAY 1
Meet your DO Guide on the southeast corner of Broadway and West 76th St at 5:45 AM. Departure is at 6:00 AM
Arrive at Pinkham Notch in the afternoon
Afternoon mountaineering and ropes movement course
Evening at Joe Dodge Lodge

DAY 2
Attempt Mount Washington summit
Spend night at Joe Dodge Lodge

DAY 3
Return to New York City by 8:00 PM

This trip is for experienced hikers and climbers only. When sign ups open, you'll be asked to complete a short application before purchasing your spot on the expedition. Your safety is our number one consideration and any individual who does not have appropriate preparation may not be approved.

DRIVE TO NEW HAMPSHIRE, MOUNTAINEERING COURSE

We depart New York City on Friday morning and drive into the heart of the Presidential Range of New Hampshire. Along the way, we will stop for snacks and bathroom breaks before arriving in picturesque Joe Dodge Lodge. This afternoon, we will pick up mountaineering gear including boots, crampons and ice axes. The rest of the afternoon will be spent reviewing the equipment, practicing rope movement and mountaineering techniques. This evening, we return to the lodge for a hearty, home-cooked meal and prepare mentally for the challenge that awaits.

SUMMIT ATTEMPT MOUNT WASHINGTON

A hearty breakfast will be served at 6:00 AM, preparing our bodies for an epic challenge. Moving as a team, we will steadily scale the mountain. The route begins at Lion’s Head, then past the caretakers hut, traversing the ridge high above Tuckerman’s Ravine before making the push to the summit. The descent will follow the same path, steadily and safely. Your safety comes first. We will redefine our goal in progress according to conditions and the state of the group.

RETURN TO NEW YORK CITY

With a feeling of accomplishment, we will take our time packing our gear before driving home through New England. We expect to return to the Upper West Side by 8:00 PM.

Accommodations

The famed Joe Dodge Lodge is nestled in the Pinkham Notch at the base of Mount Washington. Pinkham Notch has been a hub for hiking, climbing, snowshoeing, and skiing on the Presidential Range of the White Mountains since the 1920s and attracts world-class explorers. With Mount Washington hovering high above, the lodge is perfectly situated among the White Mountain greats. Accommodations are basic with bunk beds and shared bathrooms.   • Double plastic or mountaineering boots*

  • Down coat or insulated parka
  • Waterproof shell jacket

  • Neck warmer/balaclava (to cover all exposed skin)

  • Ski goggles or mountaineering sunglasses
  • 3 1-liter water bottles. No Camelbacks or bladders as they freeze easily.
  • Toiletries
  • Bath towel for lodge

  • Money for meals on the road Saturday and Monday
