About the trip

Ascend the tallest of the Adirondack 46ers

Mount Marcy, the highest peak in New York State, stands at 5,344 feet. Well above treeline, it offers stunning views of the 46 High Peaks of the Adirondack region. In winter, the exposed summit can include anything from hurricane force winds, to sheets of ice, to several feet of snow.

This long weekend in the heart of Upstate New York will impress that winter in the Northeast requires being ready for anything. You’ll be well prepared by guides who have seen it all so your team will have the best chance of gaining the summit. As the sun sets, you'll retire to the comfort of the Adirondak Loj to enjoy home cooked meals and time by the fire with friends.

Itinerary

Drive to Adirondacks, Hike Mount Jo

We depart New York City on Saturday morning and drive into the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. Along the way, we will stop for lunch and bathroom breaks before arriving at the Historic Adirondak Loj. This afternoon, we'll review the equipment and embark on a short three mile hike up Mount Jo to get used to the conditions and gear. From our summit, we'll be able to see the snow capped peak of Mount Marcy if conditions are right. This evening, we return to the loj for a hearty, home-cooked meal and prepare mentally for the challenge that awaits.

Hiking Distance: 3 milesHiking Time: 2 hours

Mount Marcy Summit Attempt

A hearty breakfast will be served at 7:00 AM, preparing our bodies for the day's challenge. We'll begin our fifteen mile hike along a gradual trail to Marcy Dam. Our snowshoes will be invaluable as we hike through the snowy forests on our way up. Once above treeline, we're exposed to the elements and will have to negotiate with icy conditions. Your safety comes first. We will redefine our goal in progress according to conditions and the state of the group. Your guides will assist with your gear along the way, ensuring that you're using the optimal equipment properly as you push for the top. After tagging the summit and taking in the view of the 46 High Peaks around us, we'll descend back to the comfort of the loj for dinner and celebratory drinks.

Hiking Distance: 15 milesHiking Time: 10 hours

Return to New York City

With a feeling of accomplishment, we will take our time packing our gear before driving home through New York. We'll stop for lunch along the way and can expect to return to the Upper West Side by 8:00 PM.

Weather

The mountains of the northeast have a reputation for making their own weather - and Marcy is no exception. Despite how ground conditions may appear, summit temperatures can often fall well below zero degrees with sustained winds over 30 mph and snow drifts that can be several feet higher than on the ground. For that reason, layers are strongly recommended to help manage changes in temperature. Exterior layers should be wind and waterproof and boots with gaiters are required for the climb.

Lodging

Every evening will be spent at the Adirondak Loj. The Loj, built in 1927, has been a getaway for hikers, climbers, and snowshoers for decades. Your stay includes home cooked meals, a bed in our group's shared bunk rooms, and time to explore the Loj. The Loj has full bathrooms and showers, and a comfortable living room with a stone fireplace and room to relax, unwind, and share trail stories.

Training

While this is not a technical climb, conditions in the winter can be quite similar to alpine conditions found in more extreme environments. Having a high level of physical fitness is essential for a successful climb. Hiking is the best training you can do to get used to a long day of going uphill. When hiking is not an option, stairs, a stairmill or treadmill at a steep incline can mimic climbing. Aim to exercise at least three times a week for the months leading up the trip. Weight training and flexibility training will help prevent injury and endurance.
