Glide along the famed Route of the Seven Carries

Far north, near the High Peaks of the Adirondack Mountains, is a region of shallow ponds and lakes sprinkled like gems among the ancient woodlands. Short carries or “portages” string these waterways into a necklace adorning a landscape of rare beauty, the St Regis Canoe Area.

Along the famous Route of the Seven Carries, you and your fellow adventurers with paddle to far shores and share the load, transporting your gear over land to canoe beyond the realm of civilization. From our idyllic remote camp, we’ll swim and relax to the sound of the loons. A renowned adventure the following day will earn us epic views from the top of St. Regis Mountain; and you will recount your day with pride and a few s’mores as you gather with friends around the evening campfire and prepare to tuck into your tent with a view of the stars.

Flights

This trip departs from New York City. Our early morning departure requires booking flights to arrive the previous night. Departures after 9 pm on the return day are possible or an additional night in NYC is recommended. If you would like drive yourself after flying, Montreal is the closest airport, a two-hour drive from our destination.

Weather

By the numbers, the weather trends highs in the seventies and lows in the fifties by late August. On the water, these temps can feel somewhat cooler. Rain is less than likely but be prepared for this possibility.

Lodging

We'll be camping out for two nights in the backcountry and will be carrying all of our gear in our boats and along every portage. We'll be sleeping in backpacking tents. Tents can be rented for $35/ea (shared, two-person) or $60/ea (single) or you can bring your own. Sleeping bag and sleeping pad rentals are also available. Food and communal gear will be carried up by the group, so be sure to leave space in your pack!

Training

This trip is not rigorous. It does, however, require a moderate level of physical fitness. All portages, carrying canoes as well as gear, will be on flat ground. A full day of paddling, portageing, and hiking up a mountain can add up. We strongly encourage our hikers to experience hiking on rugged trails, particularly up and down steep hills. Those who are in good shape are more likely to enjoy the experience.

This trip is ideal for adventurers who want to experience an uncommon way of exploring in a pristine wilderness area. This itinerary includes intermediate hikes and portages so we recommend this trip for participants who have a moderate level of fitness. Some hiking experience is recommended and first-time backpackers are welcome.
