About the trip

A beautiful and challenging climb in the Hudson Valley

What We Love

  • Hit the highlights of the western Hudson Valley
  • Diverse scenery over many miles
  • Beautiful views of the river
  • Challenging terrain

Your Day

The Highlands Trail highlights the natural beauty of the Highlands region, and draws the public's attention to this endangered resource. It is a cooperative effort of the New York - New Jersey Trail Conference, conservation organizations, state and local governments, and local businesses and extends over 150 miles. Today, we'll be hiking twelve of the trail's best miles. Our journey starts in Black Rock Forest, where we'll quickly ascend to the ridge, taking in views from Jupiter's Boulder and Split Rock. We'll weave our way through mountain lakes and streams before crossing from Black Rock into Storm King State Park. The views of the valley just get better and better as we climb our way to the top of Storm King Mountain and take in views of the mighty Hudson as our reward. We'll descend down towards the water, where we'll be ready to head home after a day on some of the region's best trails.

Perfect for: Experienced hikers up for a challenge, adventurers who can maintain a strong pace over multiple miles

Level 6

Moderate - For fit and experienced hikers

Level 6 trips will push you with a faster pace and longer distances. This hard work allows you to see more terrain and higher vistas. You should expect to be tired and fulfilled on the van ride home.

We’ll be active for five to eight hours. Prepare for this trip by maintaining your daily fitness regime that includes both cardio and strength.

Be ready to cover some serious distance. We may hike up to twelve miles today, nearly a half-marathon.

We’ll be hiking on varying mountainous terrain, which will involve navigating rock faces, loose stones, and steep, uneven trails.

Elevation Change

Up to 2,000 feet per day.

Up to 10,000 feet.

Weather conditions can be quite different from the city in the mountainous regions we visit. Temperatures can be quite cooler as we head north or to higher elevations. Keep your eyes out for an email from our team a few days in advance of your trip. That email will provide updated weather conditions and will alert you to anything additional you should put in your pack to prepare. We head outside in any weather, as long as we know it's safe, and we don't let a little rain or wind ruin a chance for an adventure. You can contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions about preparing for trail conditions.
