About the trip

Climb the second highest Catskills' peak

What We Love

  • The Catskills' second highest peak
  • Moderate trails with no scrambling
  • Climb a historic fire tower
  • Stunning views

Your Day

Only one peak stands taller than Hunter Mountain, set high among its fellow 3500' Catskill mountains. Our eight-mile trail begins at the beautiful Diamond Notch Falls before winding through thick forest as we climb. The ascent occurs at a mild grade, free from any technical sections, but that certainly doesn't make it easy. Once at the top, we'll be able to ascend the historic fire tower for unobstructed views above treeline before our trek back down.

Perfect for : Intermediate hikers, experienced hikers, fit adventurers

Intensity

Level 6

Moderate - For fit and experienced hikers

Level 6 trips will push you with a faster pace and longer distances. This hard work allows you to see more terrain and higher vistas. You should expect to be tired and fulfilled on the van ride home.

Activity

We’ll be active for five to eight hours. Prepare for this trip by maintaining your daily fitness regime that includes both cardio and strength.

Distances

Be ready to cover some serious distance. We may hike up to eleven miles today, nearly a half-marathon.

Surfaces

We’ll be hiking on varying mountainous terrain, which will involve navigating various rock faces, loose stones, and steep, uneven trails.

Elevation Change

Up to 2,000 feet per day.

Altitude

Up to 10,000 feet.

Weather

Weather conditions can be quite different from the city in the mountainous regions we visit. Temperatures can be quite cooler as we head north or to higher elevations. Keep your eyes out for an email from our team a few days in advance of your trip. That email will provide updated weather conditions and will alert you to anything additional you should put in your pack to prepare. We head outside in any weather, as long as we know it's safe, and we don't let a little rain or wind ruin a chance for an adventure. You can contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions about preparing for trail conditions.
