About the trip

Climb the mountain known for the Worst Weather on Earth.

At 6,288 feet, Mount Washington is the tallest in the Northeast but it packs the punch of mountains many times its size. Seated in the confluence of three major storm tracks with valleys funneling everything in the region onto its summit this peak, known as one of the harshest winter environments on earth, affords no half measures.

If your application to join a climbing team is approved, your skills will be tested on this world-class mountaineering objective. After stringent vetting, our three-day adventure begins with a winter mountaineering course, practicing rope skills and learning to move on the mountain as a team. After a good night's rest at the storied Joe Dodge Lodge, located at the base of the mountain, we will rise early and attempt the magnificent peak.

Drive to New Hampshire, Mountaineering Course

We depart New York City on Friday morning and drive into the heart of the Presidential Range of New Hampshire. The rest of the afternoon will be spent reviewing the equipment, practicing rope movement and mountaineering techniques. This evening, we return to the lodge for a hearty, home-cooked meal and prepare mentally for the challenge that awaits. (Meals: D)

Mount Washington Summit Attempt

A hearty breakfast will be served at 6:00 AM, preparing our bodies for an epic challenge. Moving as a team, we will steadily scale the mountain. The route begins at Lion’s Head, then past the caretakers hut, traversing the ridge high above Tuckerman’s Ravine before making the push to the summit. The descent will follow the same path, steadily and safely. Your safety comes first. We will redefine our goal in progress according to conditions and the state of the group.
Hiking Distance: 8.5 milesHiking Time: 10 hours

Return to New York City

With a feeling of accomplishment, we will take our time packing our gear before driving home through New England. We expect to return to the Upper West Side by 8:00 PM.

Mount Washington is home to some of the worst weather on earth, including the highest wind speed ever observed by a human at 231 mph. While we likely won't encounter speeds that high, winds are routinely sustained above 50 mph in the winter. Summit temperatures can get as low as double digits below zero with wind chill and snow is almost certainly guaranteed. All climbers must bring enough gear to cover any exposed skin and must demonstrate that their gear meets the guides' standards before starting the summit attempt. Evenings at the lodge will be in heated accommodations.

The famed Joe Dodge Lodge is nestled in the Pinkham Notch at the base of Mount Washington. Pinkham Notch has been a hub for hiking, climbing, snowshoeing, and skiing on the Presidential Range of the White Mountains since the 1920s and attracts world-class explorers. With Mount Washington hovering high above, the lodge is perfectly situated among the White Mountain greats. Accommodations are basic with bunk beds and shared bathrooms. If you have dietary requests, please let us know.

On this technical climb, conditions in the winter can extreme and dangerous. Having a high level of physical fitness is essential for a successful climb and the safety of the group. Leading up to your trip, hiking is the best training you can do to get used to a long day of going uphill. When hiking is not an option, stairs, a stairmill or treadmill at a steep incline can mimic climbing. Aim to exercise at least three times a week for the months leading up the trip. Weight training and flexibility training will help prevent injury and endurance. Applicants for this trip must have winter hiking experience including familiarity with snowshoes and winter gear.
