About the trip

Bask in some of NY's greatest views over 14 challenging miles

What We Love

  • See the highlights of the Shawangunks
  • Visit glacial lakes
  • Observe unique wildlife
  • Mix of carriage road and footpaths

Your Day

After arriving at the beautiful glacial Lake Minnewaska, we'll warm up with four miles through the lush and mystical forests high above the Palmaghatt Ravine. We'll take in the sweeping views of Gertrude's Nose and the Hudson Valley as we make our way to the cliffs of Hamilton Point. Our next stop is Lake Awosting, where we can wade into the water for a brief cool down, but this is just the beginning! After our stop at Awosting, we'll turn off onto gentle carriage roads and join the wondrous Shawangunk Ridge Trail. The SRT covers 74 miles from High Point, NJ to Rosendale, NY as it traverses a ridge line that has been called "one of Earth's last great places" by the Nature Conservancy.

Our 6 miles along the SRT will show us some of the best of what this trail has to offer. We'll duck through caves and bravely scramble up the white quartzite conglomerate cliffs to breathtaking views from Castle Point and Litchfield Ledge, stretching out to the Catskill Mountains. Before long we'll find ourselves at Rainbow Falls and we'll enjoy the sound of running water as we continue along our mountain stream all the way back to the trailhead. Our hike may end here, but the peace and wonder of our trip will stay with us for much longer!

Depending on trail conditions, snowshoes or microspikes may be required. If so, they will be provided by your guide.

Perfect for: Experienced hikers, hearty adventurers looking for a challenge

Activity

We’ll be active for five to eight hours. Prepare for this trip by maintaining your daily fitness regime that includes both cardio and strength.

Distances

Be ready to cover some serious distance. We may hike up to fourteen miles today, over a half-marathon.

Surfaces

We’ll be hiking on varying mountainous terrain, which will involve navigating various rock faces, loose stones, and steep, uneven trails.

Elevation Change

Up to 2,000 feet per day.

Altitude

Up to 10,000 feet.

Weather

Weather conditions can be quite different from the city in the mountainous regions we visit. Temperatures can be quite cooler as we head north or to higher elevations. Keep your eyes out for an email from our team a few days in advance of your trip. That email will provide updated weather conditions and will alert you to anything additional you should put in your pack to prepare. We head outside in any weather, as long as we know it's safe, and we don't let a little rain or wind ruin a chance for an adventure. You can contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions about preparing for trail conditions.
