About the trip

Hike to a secluded mountain lake

What We Love

  • Hike on the historic Appalachian Trail
  • Remote mountain lake
  • Open views of lakes and forests
  • Unique flora and rock formations

Your Day

Rich in diversity, in both vegetation and terrain, this beautiful five mile trail will lead us to several spectacular viewpoints. We will travel through rhododendron groves and lush woodlands, learning about pitch pine and the unique puddingstone ridge underfoot. The majority of our climb will come in the first two miles where we will ascend nearly 900 vertical feet. After hiking a short section of the famous Appalachian Trail and visiting the state line between New York and New Jersey, we will follow an undulating mountain ridge until we make our way to the secluded Surprise Lake for lunch.

Perfect for: Fit, first-time hikers who are up for a challenge, experienced hikers looking for a relaxing day.

Drive to Meet

Have your own transportation? Select the "Drive to meet" option at check out. You'll meet your guide at the parking area across from Greenwood Lake Marina in Hewitt, NJ at 9:30 AM.

Weather conditions can be quite different from the city in the mountainous regions we visit. Temperatures can be quite cooler as we head north or to higher elevations. Keep your eyes out for an email from our team a few days in advance of your trip. That email will provide updated weather conditions and will alert you to anything additional you should put in your pack to prepare. We head outside in any weather, as long as we know it's safe, and we don't let a little rain or wind ruin a chance for an adventure. You can contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions about preparing for trail conditions.
