Your Day

Break out of your comfort zone on this exhilarating day of waterfall rappelling in the Catskills. We will begin with a short hike through the beautiful trails of the Catskills to the edge of the first waterfall. Once we reach the falls, our guides will set up the anchor system and give us thorough canyoneering instruction. We'll review safety procedures and get a few tips. Then it's time to go! Our day will be spent rappelling, descending down a near-vertical rock face alongside cascading waterfalls. Throughout our jam-packed adventure we will rappel down five different waterfalls, dropping 1500 feet over less than two miles. We will feel a world away from the city, as the fresh water splashes in our faces.

It's not all down, though, expect to finish the day with a short, but challenging hike uphill and out of the remote notch. This is a true adventure and exploration.

  • Ziplock bag for your phone or camera if you plan to have either in your pack
  • Change of clothes and shoes for the ride home (can be left in van)

Wear

Essential Clothing
  • Comfortable athletic clothing that's not too baggy
  • Optional bathing suit under your clothes
  • Sturdy hiking boots or trail runners -- your footwear must fit your foot well and have an aggressive sole

Drive to Meet

If you would prefer to drive yourself, you can select the "drive to meet" option at check out. You'll meet your guide at Plattekill Travel Plaza at 8:30 AM. From there, you'll follow the van about 45 minutes to the parking area. Please note there may be a fee to park.

Level 3

Easy Active - Perfect for Active First Timers

Level 3 trips will give you a broad sense of what hiking is all about. Test yourself on intermediate terrain, including light rock scrambles and ascending multiple peaks. The trips will invigorate you and inspire you to continue strengthening your hiking skills.

Activity

Three to five hours is standard. Prepare for the trip by jogging three miles or exercising two or three days a week.

Distances

Plan on getting starter miles under your belt. You’ll be hiking three to six miles on this trip, the average distance run in an hour-long basketball game.

Surfaces

You’ll be hiking on rolling terrain with bare rock surfaces, steeps, roots and small boulders.

Elevation Change

There could be up to 1,000 feet of change in the day.

Altitude

From sea level to 3,000 feet.

Weather

Weather conditions can be quite different from the city in the mountainous regions we visit. Temperatures can be quite cooler as we head north or to higher elevations. Keep your eyes out for an email from our team a few days in advance of your trip. That email will provide updated weather conditions and will alert you to anything additional you should put in your pack to prepare. We head outside in any weather, as long as we know it's safe, and we don't let a little rain or wind ruin a chance for an adventure.
