About the trip

Hike the Elephant Back

The Elephant Back is a moderate, 3.7 mile lollipop loop near Yellowstone Lake in the southeastern section of the park. We begin our hike near Lake Lodge and amble through coniferous forests, heading inland from the lake. The trail begins to gradually rise, taking us to one of the highest points on the western banks of the lake. Midway up the trail, the trees open to reveal stunning views of Yellowstone Lake and the Absaroka Mountain Range.. The hike loops back towards the road, winding through open forests, thick with flowers in the spring and early summer. This area is prime grizzly bear territory, so keep your eyes peeled for these elusive creatures!

On the full-day tour, we can add on a trip to a nearby geyser basin.
